Generation X: CharactersThis is a quick rundown of some of the main and recurring characters that graced the pages of Generation X over the years.
Adrienne FrostFirst Appearance: Generation X # 48
Profile: When the Massachusettes Academy was declared bankrupt, Emma Frost turned to her sister, Adrienne, for financial help. Adrienne agreed to help and became a co-head of the school. Her motives were far from humanitatian however, and Adrienne eventually planted a series of bombs throughout the Academy. When Synch was killed trying to disarm the bombs, Emma shot Adrienne causing her death.
Angelo Espinosa (Skin)First Appearance: Uncanny X-Men # 317
Powers: Six feet of extra skin which can be reshaped at will.
Profile: Born in Los Angeles, Angelo Espinosa faked his own death in order to leave the gang he had been a reluctant member of. Abducted by the Phalanx, he joined Generation X where his initial grumpy attitude was replaced by a playful manner when he began to learn how to control his powers. After leaving the Massachussets Academy, he moved back to Los Angeles with Jubilee. Soon after he was kidnapped by the Church of Humanity and crucified on the lawn of the Xavier Institute.
Arthur 'Artie' MaddicksFirst Appearance: X-Factor (1st series) # 2
Powers: Telepathy, can generate psionic holograms.
Profile: When Artie Maddicks' powers manifested, his father began to performs experiments with the aim of 'curing' him. He was saved by X-Factor and spent some time as their ward and part of the X-Terminators before being sent to a private boarding school. Kidnapped from here by Gene Nation, he was rescued by Generation X who he lived with until moving to Monaco under the care of Monet's father. He was depowered on M-Day.
Clarice Ferguson (Blink)First Appearance: Uncanny X-Men # 317
Powers: Teleportation by way of distorting spatial energy.
Profile: Born in the Bahamas but raised primarily in the USA, Clarice Ferguson hurt someone close to her upon the manifestation of her powers and came to fear using them. Abducted by the Phalanx she found herself in the company of the young mutants who would go on to form Generation X. In order to save them all from Harvest, she used her powers to 'distort' and kill him. Unfortunately, she was unable to escape the portal created by her distortion and was killed herself.
Claudette & Nicole St. Croix (The M Twins)First Appearance: Uncanny X-Men # 316 (as Monet), Generation X # 19 (Nicole), Generation X # 31 (Claudette)
Powers: Telepathy, can merge into one being and create dimensional portals.
Profile: Born in Algeria but raised primarily in Monaco, Claudette and Nicole St. Croix merged together to impersonate their sister, Monet, after she was turned into Penance by their brother. Believing Monet to be their father's favourite child, they kept up the pretense until they were unexpectedly separated during their time with Generation X. Following this they traded placed with Monet, allowing her to escape the Penance form whilst trapping themselves within it. Eventually, the twins were able to leave the Penance body and returned to Monaco to live with their father.
Emma Frost (The White Queen)First Appearance: Uncanny X-Men # 129
Powers: Telepathy, diamond form. Profile: Born in Boston, Emma Frost had a troubled childhood which led to her joining the Hellfire Club as their White Queen. In this role, she fought the X-Men several times before the death of the Hellions prompted her to renounce her villanous ways. Shortly after, she became co-head of Generation X. When the team disbanded, she moved to Genosha but returned to the Xavier Institute when it was destroyed. She then became co-head of the school and an active X-Man, despite the misgivings of several of the Institute's residents.
Everett Thomas (Synch)First Appearance: X-Men # 36
Powers: Extends an aura of synchronicity to duplicate the powers of other mutants.
Profile: Born in St. Louis, Everett Thomas learned that he was a mutant when he was kidnapped by the Phalanx. After this encounter, he became a member of Generation X. With his easy going and calm nature he often seemed to assume the role of leader within the group. When Adrienne Frost planted bombs throughout the Academy, he was killed trying to disarm them and save the school.
GaiaFirst Appearance: Generation X # 37
Powers: Telepathy, telekinesis, can create and shape matter.
Profile: Gaia spent thousands of years chained to the Universal Amalgamator and acting as its 'guardian' before she was rescued by Synch and helped Generation X escape from the rapidly collapsing Citadel. After being freed, she spent some time by herself before briefly joining Generation X. She soon left again, deciding that she wanted to experience the world fully.
Jubilation Lee (Jubilee / Wondra)First Appearance: Uncanny X-Men # 244
Powers: Projects pyrotechnic energy plasmoids. Currently depowered.
Profile: Born in Beverly Hills, Jubilee spent several years with the X-Men before joining Generation X in order to learn more about her powers. Often thought of as ditzy, she showed strength, bravery and a surprising skills for tactics whilst at the Academy. When the team disbanded she moved to Los Angeles to pursue actiny but ultimately rejoined the X-Men. She was depowered on M-Day and later resurfaced as part of the New Warriors, using a tech suit to emulate super powers. She now uses the codename 'Wondra'.
Jonothon Starsmore (Chamber / Decibel)First Appearance: Generation X # 1
Powers: Comprised of psionic energy, limited telepathy. Currently depowered.
Profile: Born in London, Jonothon Starsmore blew off half off his face and crippled his girlfriend when his powers manifested. Invited to join Generation X, by Professor Xavier, Jono was something of a loner though he came to see the team as family. His 'graduation' to main team of X-Men was partly responsible for the disbanding of Generation X. He carried out some undercover work for the X-Men before being depowered and almost killed on M-Day. Shortly afterwards Clan Akkaba restored his body, a side effect of which saw him taking on the appearance of Apocalypse. He then joined the New Warriors and took on the codename 'Decibel'.
LeechFirst Appearance: Uncanny X-Men # 179
Powers: Negates the powers of other mutants.
Profile: Abandoned by his parents when his powers began to manifest, Leech was raised by the Morlocks. After the massacre carried out at the behest of Mr. Sinister, Leech joined the X-Terminators and spent some time as a ward of X-Factor, before being transferred to a private boarding school. He was kidnapped from the school by Gene Nation but rescued by Generation X who took him in for some time, though he was eventually sent to live with Monet's father in Monaco. Later, Leech was forced to work with Weapon X who he escaped when the programme was discovered. He since seems to have returned to the Morlocks.
Marius St. Croix (Emplate)First Appearance: Generation X # 1
Powers: Feeds on the marrow of mutants and can then duplicate their powers.
Profile: When Marius St. Croix's mutant abilities manifested themselves, he eagerly turned to his sisters but they reacted with disgust. In retaliation, Marius transformed Monet into the body that would become known as Penance before being sent to another dimension by his youngest sisters. He was cruelly tortured in the dimension he was sent to but survived by feeding on the marrow of Penance. When he escaped, he returned to our dimension to feed on other mutants, quickly targeting Generation X. He came after the team several times and also attempted to recapture Penance on more than one occassion.
MondoFirst Appearance: Generation X # 3
Powers: Absorbs and takes on the properties of organic and inorganic materials.
Profile: Born in Samoa, Mondo was betrayed by Cordelia Frost and kept against his will by the Hellfire Club. After being rescued by Generation X he joined the team but was soon revealed to be a clone. The clone was killed by Bastion and the real Mondo was finally revealed fighting alongside Black Tom and Juggernaut. After a failed attack on Generation X, he vanished and his whereabouts are unknown.
Monet St. Croix (M)First Appearance: Uncanny X-Men # 316
Powers: Superhuman strength, flight, telepathy and high intelligence.
Profile: Born in Bosnia, Monet St. Croix was raised in the lap of luxury in Monaco. When her brother turned into the creature known as Emplate he transformed her into Penance while her twin sisters joined together to masquerade as her. Freed from the Penance form some years later, she retained her belief in her own absolute perfect whilst a member of Generation X. When the team disbanded, she joined X-Corps and then X-Corporation before becoming part of X-Factor Investigations.
Tristan BrawnFirst Appearance: Generation X # 50
Profile: Tristan Brawn enrolled at the Massachusetts Academy when it opened itself up as an exclusive boarding school. Almost immediately he discovered the truth behind the school and the identities of Generation X. He began to go out with Paige Guthrie after threatening to 'out' the team if she did not agree to go on a date with him. He left the school following Adrienne Frost's attempt to blow it up, along with all the other students who were not mutants.
Paige Guthrie (Husk)First Appearance: X-Force (1st Series) # 32 (possibly New Mutants # 42)
Powers: Sheds skin at will to reveal a layer of various material underneath.
Profile: Born in Kentucky, Paige Guthrie grew up wanting to be a mutant and X-Man like her brother Sam aka Cannonball. As a member of Generation X, Paige was a dedicated student who strove to better herself in the hopes of earning a place on the main team one day. After Generation X, she joined X-Corps before going on to serve with the X-Men for a brief time. While in a relationship with Angel, she was active in Mutantes Sans Frontières though she returned to the Xavier Institute after M-Day.
Penance / HollowFirst Appearance: Generation X # 1
Powers: Razor sharp skin.
Profile: Originally created as a punishment for Monet St. Croix by her brother, the Penance body served as Emplate's nourishment for years before Gateway transported her to Generation X. As she was completely mute, the truth about Penance did not surface for some time until Monet was freed from the body and replaced within it by her twin sisters. Later, the twins were separated from the Penance body but it continued to function, appearing to contain some independant intelligence. After spending some time living in Monaco, he later resurfaced as part of The Loners where she was given the codename 'Hollow'.
Sean Cassidy (Banshee)First Appearance: Uncanny X-Men # 28
Powers: Sonic screams which have a range of applications. Profile: Born in Ireland, Sean Cassidy had a colourful life before joining the X-Men. He was an active member for several years before becoming co-headmaster at the Massachusetts Academy. When Moira McTaggart died, his inability to deal with her death was one of the factors which led to the disbanding of Generation X. This was the beginning of a downward spiral which saw him form X-Corp and have his throat slit by Mystique. He was killed trying to prevent a major air disaster which was caused by Vulcan.
